What is Web Based Conferencing?

What is web based conferencing? Well, sure, you probably heard of it before - it’s some sort of software that lets you hold online meetings. But really, what is web based conferencing? Because saying that it is “an online meeting software” barely even describes the true power and potential of web based conferencing. Why, you can call any typical instant messaging service with meeting capabilities an online meeting software and people will readily believe you. And yet, is it the same? What is web based conferencing? And why is it so important to businesses worldwide?

What is Web Based Conferencing: A Definition

In essence, web based conferencing is indeed a software application with interactive capabilities. But more than that, web based conferencing is a new communications medium and it’s not quite like any other. What is web based conferencing? Or rather, what is it like?

Web based conferencing technology may share characteristics with other media, such as teleconferencing and live multimedia presentations, but ultimately it requires specific techniques for maximum effectiveness. The truth is web based conferencing is different from other communication tools in terms of potential.

Never has the power of the Internet been more emphasized than it has now by web based conferencing technology. The Internet is a powerful tool for communication, allowing people to overcome the constraints of geography and connect with other people from the other side of the globe. By taking advantage of this potential, web based conferencing is able to transcend the boundaries presented in teleconferencing, audio conferencing, phone conferencing, and even videoconferencing.

What is Web Based Conferencing: Keeping it Simple

Today’s web based conferencing systems are so packed with features that it’s easy to become enamored with all of them. When conducting a web based seminar, try to avoid the temptation of trying all the bells and whistles. At most, just master the basics, such as slide control, polling and messaging. And when you become adept at what you’re doing, gradually introduce more sophisticated features, such as streaming audio, whiteboarding, and application sharing. After all, what is web based conferencing but an interactive medium for communication and collaboration?

What is Web Based Conferencing: Keeping it Short

The most effective live events are those that last only for 60 to 90 minutes. Keep your web based conferencing short and direct. If your program requires more time than that, consider breaking it into segments delivered over days or weeks. The trick is to build your presentation around three or four key messages to leave with your audience.
