Free Minnesota Criminal Records

The official database for free Minnesota criminal records is called the Computerized Criminal History (CCH) System. Serving as the state central repository of free Minnesota criminal records, it contains data on subjects arrested for felony, gross misdemeanor, enhanced misdemeanor, and some misdemeanor offenses. The information stored here is used by the criminal justice community. Free Minnesota criminal records are used by criminal justice agencies as bases for their decisions concerning investigations, arrests, bail/bond, criminal charges, plea bargains, convictions, probation, and placement in correctional facilities.

But aside from those mentioned, the free Minnesota criminal records contained in the CCH System are also used during mandated background checks on individuals. Like in most states, the Minnesota State law requires employers to perform free Minnesota criminal records and background checks on their prospective hires. Free Minnesota criminal records may also be used by licensing boards on license applicants and by public records researchers.

What Information can you get from Free Minnesota Criminal Records?

The CCH System contains free Minnesota criminal records of all arrests and convictions. State statutes require law enforcement agencies in the state to report juvenile felony and gross misdemeanor arrests, and adult felony, gross misdemeanor, enhanced gross misdemeanor and targeted misdemeanor arrests to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). It is the BCA’s responsibility to store these reports as free Minnesota criminal records into the CCH System.

Based on this, we can therefore assume that the CCH System includes information on such free Minnesota criminal records as juvenile felonies and juvenile gross misdemeanor arrests. In addition to that, the CCH system also stores free Minnesota criminal records of adult felony, adult gross misdemeanor, adult enhanced gross misdemeanor, and adult targeted misdemeanor arrests.

The Minnesota State statute does not require law enforcement agencies to report other misdemeanor arrests other than those mentioned above. Therefore basically, the CCH System only includes free Minnesota criminal records of arrests regarding crimes of a serious nature, such as serious misdemeanors and felonies.

What does a “no record” response on a free Minnesota Criminal Records Inquiry mean?

You can get a “no record” response on a free Minnesota criminal records inquiry for a number of reasons. One possible reason is that the subject does not have a record stored in the System. Other reasons include:

The subject’s free Minnesota criminal records are not public data
The subject’s name was entered incorrectly
A nickname was entered, rather than the name associated with the record
Criminal data about the subject was not sent to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension
The subject’s record is under a former name, such as a maiden name.
